The good ole hockey game...

I play roller hockey with a group of friends on a squad we call Team Cobra.  While we're not the biggest G.I. Joe fans, our jerseys seem really cool with the Cobra logo on the chest.  Here's a picture of me in the penalty box serving time, probably because I have a potty mouth.

Everybody's Working for the Weak

After a gruelling, exciting week of summer film camp with eight year olds, I was definitely ready for the weekend. Friday night I started piecing together the summer camp film since a big premiere was scheduled for Saturday. Kara and I stepped out for a bit and took in a gallery walk of sorts on Cherokee Street. Firecracker Press had recently relocated down there and was holding a grand opening celebration. Maid Rite was playing and several other galleries and shops were open in support of the night. It was a nice enough night out to make the gallery walk and we saw some really interesting pieces.

It's still a shame that Cherokee is as dilapidated as it is. Hopefully soon the remnants of Antique Row and this newer, hipper stretch can connect, cohabitat, and flourish to create one St. Louis' premiere neighborhoods. If I may rant, there simply is not enough in St. Louis like Cherokee, or at least what St. Louis could be. Now please don't harp on me about the Loop and how great that is. I'll agree with once it's more than two blocks and a handful of shops. Don't be afraid to expand your borders, people!

One of the main objectives of the walk was to scope out some of the featured art by Ben Stegmann, creator and distributor Freezerburn, a zine beyond explanation, so check it out for yourself. Afterwards, Kara and I stopped for Ted Drewes, which was once again delicious. Drewes is becoming a dangerous habit for us. We've already stopped there innumerable times since it reopened on Grand.

On Saturday, Kara organized a yard sale and we got rid of a lot of junk. It was insane. The traffic was slow at first, but the day proved to be a success as we cleaned out our basement and met a few folks from the neighborhood in the process. I stepped out to check in Karu throughout the day as I took breaks from editing the pirate (summer camp) movie. I settled for a rough edit so I could burn a DVD for the screening that night but am still in the midst of cleaning up a final version for all of the kids to take home. Hopefully, if the finished product is of decent quality, it may screen at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase in July. Fingers crossed.

After the screening on Saturday, Karibe and I met up with Rich and we attended Iron Man. Although it was the second time Rich and I had seen it, I was excited to see the Nick Fury segment after the end credits. I was really glad, though, that I saw it again in the theatre as there many details I missed through the first viewing. This was just a quality superhero movie.

On Sunday, I got up early to play a little outdoor hockey in Maplewood. This was a decent rink, though it was really, really hot. I was exhausted for just about the rest of the day. We had a good group out, the Brothers Bryan (with Nick in goal), Gerald, and Dan Nichols. It was fun playing hockey with them and I certainly miss skating on a regular basis, especially competitively.

K and I took it easy the rest of Sunday, which was very nice, especially after how crazy hectic our time has been since, oh, about the beginning of the year. Tonight we are going to see "The Incredible Hulk." I'm not quite sure yet how I feel about this version of my most beloved Marvel comic book character.

David and I are getting together tomorrow to create special effects for the pirate movie, finish up the Frankenstein movie, and jump start progress on the knife-throwing movie. It has been many months since Meatloaf Productions worked on anything, and it has been a very painful time, but hopefully that is changing in the very immediate future.

Lazy May

May has come in slow and steady. I haven't been to the movies since "Iron Man" but have watched a few at home including "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," "The Watcher in the Woods," and "Band of Outsiders."

This past weekend, Kara, Kara's dad Rick, Rich, and I knocked out a major portion of refinishing our bedroom. We put up all of the drywall (ceiling and walls) and mudded a majority of the room. Now we sand, re-mud, and paint and we're almost there. After working for almost 12 hours on the room Sunday, Rich and I stayed up for the entire Sharks-Stars 4OT thriller. The two teams played the eighth longest overtime game in playoff history. You know that when a game goes that long the series is close and the teams are evenly matched. Sharks goaltender Evegni Nabokov made too many great saves to have to lose that game. Better luck next year.

Dax and I are wrapping up his final class project, the shave video. Rich will be doing the voiceover tonight and hopefully we will be burning the finished product tonight. Kara and I are finalizing plans to travel to Colorado later this month. That will be a nice little vacation after having something to do or work on nearly every single night for the past couple of months.

Let's All Go to the Lobby!

After an action packed, filmmaking weekend, Kara and I went to the beautiful Winnie Moore for the Webster Film Series' screening of "Billy the Kid." This film is an intimate look at a fifteen year old kid growing up in Maine. Billy first appears as an outsider in his small town, the weird kid who is into heavy metal and karate. As the film goes along, you learn that Billy is just like any other teenage kid: dealing with gawky, awkward body changes, proud of the things you like, steadfast, headstrong, and stubborn in your beliefs, and prone to the ache of crushes and first loves. The film centers on how Billy deals with his school life, home life, and a rough upbringing. It really reminded me alot of Potosi, not of my own upbringing, but of the sentiment and mindset that most people there have. People everywhere should at least follow Billy's creed: "I'm not black, I'm not white, not foreign, just different in the mind. Different brains, that's all."

Like I mentioned in the opening, Meatloaf Productions wrapped shooting on the short film "Tonight, She takes her revenge and takes back her baby!" This, of course, is a working title. After two long weekends, its nice to have the film shot and ready for editing. Dave and I have several tricks up our sleeves for the editing process, lots of post-production effects work will be done. Hopefully it turns out well, and if it does it should be really interesting. We still have a few smaller pieces to shoot (intros, inserts, b-roll and news footage material) so the editing process will take a nice, long time.

Meatloaf Production's application for Coming Up Shorts is "under review." More than likely our app will be accepted, as over the past two years 45 projects are selected on average. Usually 10-15 are turned in on time in the end. I don't want to give anything away, but it will be magical. Check below for our entry last year. We didn't place, but we did lose out to a tit. Yes, a tit. An actual tittie.

Next Sunday I will be setting up at the St. Louis Comic Book Show. This will be my first time, so while I am anxious and nervous, I will be aided by Jeff Elden, a veteran of this comic book show. Stop by, say hi, hang out, and shop around. It will be a lot of fun.

One final note. I am a bit of a geek, some of you may know this. This geekdom, however, extends to the realm of fantasy sports. Yes, I am a gent who gushes over stats, but only in hockey, though I also participate in baseball leagues. I just wanted to share with you some of the names I have used for teams this season, because I think they are funny: James K. Polk, Wretched Bastiches, Captain Marvelous, The Skid Marks, The Old Dutch Rub, Sloppy Seconds, & the Granny Panties. One of the leagues, Murphy Hockey League III, features an actual trophy that the grand champion takes home. I missed the playoffs this year by one point, but have the top seed in the consolation round.

Hockey Talk/Let's All Go to the Lobby!

Kara and I went to the Blues game on Thursday. They played the Florida Panthers, which is of significance because Dan Nichols was also in attendance and the Panthers were the only NHL team that he had yet to see in person. What an accomplishment. Congrats to Dan. We sat right in front of Rich and his sister, Wendy. The Blues lost 1-0, but we had a great time, lots of laughing. Shannon and Grahame were also there, but relocated after the first period. Friday I went to "I am Legend." The film was okay, not great, and definitely not "The Omega Man." The best part of the film happened before it began. As a special engagement with IMAX theatres, six minutes of "The Dark Knight" was played. The scene depicts a bank robbery organized by the Joker. The sequence gives a great close-up, in-action look at Heath Ledger. Definitely creates a lot more excitement for the film, not that there wasn't a lot already. Just a great way to stoke the fires. Tonight is our Christmas party. Not sure what the crowd will be like, snow is predicted throughout the day, and after getting about 2-3 inches last night, that doesn't bode well. Dave and Tracie are out of town, so that's a bummer, Luby is gone as well. Rich will be honoring his father's birthday with a proclamation from the city of St. Louis. Today is Richard Leonard Lamberty Day. A good time shall still be had by a small group of friends, lots of snacks, good, jazzy Christmas tunes, and the holiday spirit tip-toeing about the room. The Callahans and Kara and I will have ourselves a nice little post-Christmas treat with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Click the pic for more info!
